> Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton was the regional centre for the woollen trade in the 17th and 18th centuries and was a major reason for its growth from market town to city. This propelled into the 20th century with mining and manufacturing and today the city stands with a population of over 250,000 people, with thriving engineering and aerospace industries. Wolverhampton is also the birthplace of the first vehicle to hold the land speed record with a speed over 200mph, Mystery (a.k.a. The Slug), built by the Sunbeam car company of Wolverhampton. The city also has a dubious place in motoring history as being home to the first automated traffic lights in England.
